DXF Quality Checklist Before Importing a Sewing Pattern into ET/CAD
Use this practical checklist before importing a digitized sewing-pattern DXF into ET/CAD: confirm scale, compare contours, inspect closed paths, and review pattern details.
A DXF conversion can save tracing time, but an imported file is not proof that the pattern is ready. Use the original scan, the contour overlay, and the DXF itself as three views of the same draft. The goal is to identify what needs editing before it becomes part of an ET/CAD pattern workflow.
1. Confirm scale before editing shape
Measure at least one known distance in ET/CAD and compare it with the paper pattern. If the size is wrong, revisit the verified mm-per-pixel value or reference measurement before adjusting curves by hand. Scaling a file after extensive editing can make later checks harder to trace.
The scan-to-ET DXF workflow asks for a confirmed physical scale and produces QA evidence to support this review.
2. Compare the visible contour with the source
Place the original image or contour overlay next to the imported DXF. Review long curves, corners, armholes, necklines, and any part where the source is faint. Watch for doubled segments, unwanted bridges between pieces, missing portions, and contour noise caused by shadows or paper texture.
Use the source to correct what is visible; do not assume the conversion can recover a hidden edge or intended pattern construction that was not present in the image.
3. Inspect path continuity and piece separation
Check that each intended outer edge is a usable closed contour and that separate pieces remain separate. Open or self-crossing paths, very short fragments, and accidental links can cause problems in downstream editing or export. Confirm that the expected piece count matches the imported file before continuing.
For non-pattern artwork, diagrams, or clean line drawings, the image-to-DXF converter is the more appropriate starting point; it still requires the same CAD review.
4. Add pattern knowledge manually
Review and add the information that a traced contour cannot establish on its own: notches, seam allowance, grainlines, internal construction lines, labels, grading, and process-specific layer rules. These are pattern-making decisions, not details that should be inferred from a raster image.
Common questions
What does a successful import prove? Only that the target software could open the file. It does not prove the scale, contours, piece count, pattern logic, or production suitability are correct.
Why check closed paths? Closed, clean outer contours are easier to inspect and edit as separate pieces. Broken or accidentally joined paths can make later operations unreliable.
Can the QA report replace ET/CAD review? No. QA evidence helps identify dimensions, repairs, and conversion checks, but a qualified pattern professional must still review the intended garment construction and production requirements.
