How to Prepare a Scanned Sewing Pattern for DXF Conversion

Prepare paper sewing-pattern scans for a reviewable DXF draft: clean the source, preserve a known scale, separate pieces, and check the result in ET/CAD.

Converting a paper pattern to DXF starts before the upload. A clear scan gives the tracing workflow a visible outer contour and gives the pattern maker a reliable source for later review. It does not create seam allowance, grading, missing notches, or production decisions automatically.

Start with one flat, readable source

Lay each pattern piece flat on a plain background. Scan it square to the page when possible; avoid folded paper, cast shadows, perspective distortion, and handwritten marks that overlap the cutting line. Dark, continuous outlines on a light background are easier to inspect than a photographed table full of overlapping pieces.

If a piece is larger than the scanner bed, keep the overlap between scan sections generous and record how the sections join. Do not rely on a conversion to infer a missing boundary hidden by another piece or by a page edge.

Keep a physical scale with the scan

Pixels do not contain a trustworthy millimetre size on their own. Include a known reference length or confirm a measured mm-per-pixel value before generating the DXF. Use the same physical scale for every piece in the batch, then compare the exported dimensions with the original paper before continuing in ET/CAD.

Separate and label pattern pieces

Leave whitespace between pieces, keep the outer contour visible, and capture one piece per image when that is practical. A multi-piece scan is usable when the pieces do not touch and the expected piece count is known. Name pieces before upload so a later overlay, QA report, or downloaded DXF can be matched to the paper original.

If the source is a clean logo, diagram, or line drawing rather than a garment pattern, use the general image-to-DXF converter instead.

Check the draft before pattern work continues

Review the contour overlay against the source image. Look for edges that became doubled, interrupted, or joined to the wrong piece; also compare the measured width and height with the physical pattern. Treat the generated DXF as an editable draft, then have a qualified pattern professional check contours, notches, seam allowance, grainlines, grading, and construction details in ET/CAD.

Common questions

Can a phone photo be used instead of a scan? Yes, if it is sharp, evenly lit, square to the paper, and includes a verified scale. A flat scan is usually easier to review because it avoids perspective distortion.

Will short broken lines be repaired? The scan workflow can repair only bounded short gaps. Larger gaps and occluded edges need manual correction so the system does not invent pattern geometry.

Is the downloaded DXF production-ready? No. It is a reviewable DXF draft. Verify size, contour geometry, notches, seam allowance, grading, and process requirements before any production use.
